53 Years at Loomis and Counting: The Remarkable Career of John Pemberton

Share

In the port city of Tacoma, Washington, lives a man with a storied history at Loomis. John Pemberton, the company’s most tenured employee, has dedicated 53 years and counting to his position as an Armed Driver Guard.

John's journey began in the early 1970s when he was unemployed with a broken foot and a young family to provide for. Loomis offered him a part-time position, which quickly turned into full-time, leading to a lifelong career.

Throughout his career, John has experienced the ebb and flow of work life at Loomis.

When asked about the changes he has seen at Loomis over the years, John mentioned the transition from shotguns to a variety of weapons, the switch to all vehicles having automatic transmissions and air conditioning, and even the presence of German shepherd dogs trained with German commands in the trucks during his early years.

Despite the challenges and changes, John's loyalty to Loomis has remained unwavering.

“I like the work,” John said. “I like people. I like visiting the people on the different routes."

Over the years, John's dedication has not gone unnoticed. Byron Brunette is Branch Manager of Loomis’ Tacoma facility and has known John for 13 years. He’s worked with John on route and as his lead, supervisor, and manager.

"John’s work ethic is outstanding,” Brunette said. “He always shows up early and is motivated to get started with the day—after brewing a fresh pot of coffee, of course."

Brunette also noted that every year, John ensures there is a surplus of holiday staples and treats in the lunchroom, all brought in by John himself.

John attributes his longevity at Loomis to his love for the job, his enjoyment in interacting with people, and his ability to adapt to change. He believes in sharing knowledge and respecting his fellow employees, values that have helped him earn the title of "legend" within the company. But if you ask John what he thinks of this title, his humble nature emerges.

“I'm a person that likes to stay on the downside of appearances, you know, don't like too much attention,” he said. “I try to make sure everything runs smoothly."

Dan Rushing can back up this claim, as District Manager at the Tacoma Branch and friend of John’s for over 45 years. Rushing emphasizes John's dedication and reliability.

According to Rushing, something John is known for is that he never misses work, and has always been “amazing, reliable, and dedicated to Loomis.” Rushing believes John’s passion for the company is second only to his love for his family.

When asked to describe a memorable moment with John, Rushing had this to say:

“John always worked Saturdays and wanted to have the Tuesday through Saturday shift,” he said. “I was a new employee who always got stuck working the weekends and of course never wanted to. There was only one route back in those days, but oftentimes, John’s wife would cook us breakfast before work, and I have never forgotten it."

Looking ahead, John plans to continue working as long as he feels good enough to do so. He cherishes his family life, being married for 54 years with five children. In his free time, he enjoys antiquing with his wife, who runs a spot in an antique mall.

John's story is a testament to the dedication and commitment of Loomis employees. His experience and wisdom serve as an inspiration to those considering a career with the company, emphasizing the importance of loyalty, hard work, and a positive attitude.
